11/1/07 - Northwood Assembly and Northwood Academy Announce Plans to Build New Campus at Carnes in Goose Creek

$30 Million Campus to Offer Educational Opportunities for Children of all Ages; Will be an Important Center within New Planned Community

CHARLESTON, S.C. –The Daniel Island Company has announced plans for the second important component of Carnes, its new community in Goose Creek. The Company has signed an agreement with Northwood Assembly and Northwood Academy for the development of a 60-acre campus that will eventually be home to a church, kindergarten and elementary school, child care center, upper school facility and administrative offices. The announcement follows recent news that Roper St. Francis Healthcare is purchasing a 60-acre tract within the Carnes community for future expansion.

“Northwood Assembly and Northwood Academy have been visible fixtures in the greater Charleston area for decades and we are quite pleased to have them relocating to the heart of our new community,” said Matt Sloan, President of The Daniel Island Company. “When development of Daniel Island was first getting started in the mid-1990s, we were fortunate to have Bishop England High School establish roots within the community as the island’s first school. That provided a wonderful center around which our town would eventually grow. The multi-faceted components of Northwood’s campus – particularly the incorporation of educational opportunities for grades PreK-12 – will draw people from all over and will be an important catalyst for the growth of Carnes.”

In August of 2006 Northwood’s main sanctuary building, which included a worship auditorium, administrative offices and a child care center, was destroyed by a fire. Since, temporary buildings within the existing campus have been serving Northwood’s needs. The Carnes campus in Goose Creek will be developed in several phases on 60 acres of land donated by The Daniel Island Company. The first phase will include the construction of buildings that will house a main auditorium, kindergarten and elementary school, child care center and administrative office space. Completion of phase one is tentatively scheduled for August 2009. The second phase of construction will bring the addition of an upper school facility serving grades six through twelve, along with athletic fields and, eventually, a football stadium and track and field facilities.

“It is an honor to be a part of the Carnes development. We believe that a door has been opened to provide quality ministry and an excellent educational choice to the community for years to come. This is a unique opportunity for us to create a comprehensive campus from the ground up for our parishioners, students and the greater community that we serve,” said Fred Richard, Senior Pastor.

About Northwood Assembly:
For more than 30 years, Northwood Assembly has provided an interdenominational fellowship for a diverse body of worshipers, offering comprehensive services to the community including child care, counseling, boys’ and girls’ clubs, education, community outreach, sports programs and pastoral care. It has taken a non-traditional approach to church growth, choosing to help start local, community churches instead of building a “mega church” campus. The reach and influence of Northwood in the Charleston region is extensive: It has financially sponsored and sent trained teams of people to establish community churches in Mt. Pleasant, peninsular Charleston, West Ashley, Summerville and Moncks Corner. Northwood’s new campus at Carnes will remain the center of the church’s activities.

About Northwood Academy:
Northwood Academy was founded in 1978 to provide a safe, quality education choice for the community. It has since established a reputation as a strong academic institution, providing extra-curricular activities and competitive athletics for an economically and ethnically diverse population. Northwood currently enrolls more than 900 students from communities across the tri-county area.

About The Daniel Island Company and Carnes:
The Daniel Island Company is a Charleston, South Carolina-based developer of master planned "lifestyle communities." Formed in 1997, the company is responsible for the award-winning community that has emerged on Daniel Island, a 4,000-acre sea island located within the City of Charleston. Thoughtful planning and quality execution have earned The Daniel Island Company recognition from the Urban Land Institute (2007 Award for Excellence) and the National Association of Homebuilders (Best Suburban Smart Growth Community, 2004) for exceptional smart growth development practices. The Company's second community, Carnes, is currently under development in Goose Creek, just 17 miles north of Charleston.

The master plan for development of Carnes is being designed to incorporate many of the same details and amenities found on Daniel Island and to appeal to both a local and national market. Due to its central location, businesses, offices, schools, churches, shops and restaurants will play an integral role in making this an important downtown destination for Goose Creek and Berkeley County.
